star trek 2009
cotton candy ....... delightful color big and fluffy a cloud of color and spun sugar ! take a mouthful and it tingles delightfully but suddenly it melts down to a little bit of sweetness and that was fun lets do it again !
and when you are done you think ....gee how come all that fluff and fun and I still feel empty
I liked it ! but I think I overdosed on the trailers and clips a bit cause when one would come on I would think "aha ! this is where that fits in" instead of paying attention to the movie and I would get antsy for the clip to be over and get on with the show ! when I see it again and I will ! I hope that those bumps of recognitions will smooth over a bit ! and feel a more a part of the show . I was surprised to find myself tearing up within the first five minutes of the show - there is an epic space battle and a father dies and a son is born ! it was a well done sequence to arouse a welling up of tears at a mere five minutes into the show ! one little beef - when did starship interiors get so BIG especially engeneering ! it was like factory sized ( wink *) on the Enterprise ! LOL ! (* filmed in a beer bottling company as I understand ?)
I thought the characterizations were Right On ! and all the little nods to TOS movies were interesting from the foot stomping's in ST#3 to and interesting pay off of a joke in ST#2 about a cheating a simulator test .... to the mountain climbing sequences at the start of ST#5 . I was tickled to see Ben Cross ( aka barnabas Collins revival series 1991) as Spock's father do such a good job on the part and look so Vulcan !
uniform : the ultimate trekker experience LOL!
the uniform itself is a stretchable material that is unforgiving ! a basic black tunic gives a slimming effect and I like the shoulder trim of teal ( shoulder pads included ) there is also a tight dickkie of a reddish color for the neck piece where the command pips go ! this was problematic to me cause I think I have a short fat neck and it kept rolling down and I was worried that it would roll over the pips ! LOL so I was forever fiddling unrolling and straightening it out. I understand McCoy's comment now of being in dress uniform and feeling like his neck was in a sling ! I also found myself doing the Picard Maneuver frequently ! every time you stand you tug at the bottom of the tunic to straighten it out to keep it from riding up your body - it picard maneuver happened somewhat automatically for me till I realized that was what I was doing then every time I did it is -smiled knowingly !
I have new respect for the actors who wear the uniform now ! if it is of the same material it tends to hold the heat if you get active or are indoors but outside in the evening air it was quite comfortable ...
oh and peoples reactions are amazing ! I think I talked to more strangers last night in uniform than I have in all 27 years in Chicago people just start in conversations ! "did you like the show" , "who is your favorite character ?" etc... and I meant people that would never ever talk to me in civilian clothes !! young black guys starting conversations on an el car with me ? unheard of ! but with me in the uniform he felt easy enough to talk as did some middle aged woman who confessed that she went to conventions but never had the nerve to dress up in uniform ! LOL how well I understood that ! some people remained aloof and just looked- you could tell they recognized the uniform from the TV shows but surprisingly there were no taunts or teasing's that I heard at least ! finally I relaxed and smiled a bit at people instead of looking so serious ! LOL !
I was disappointed that I was the only trekker in uniform at my showing ( at least that I could see) but the next show had several people in TOS uniforms and one Klingon in full makeup !
all in all a trek experience to remember and cherish
